Biography
I am deep inside the energy, water and waste transitions towards a Circular Economy. In the south of Western Australia I am working with local industries and communities to utilise by-products from coal-fired power stations to develop a new industry called Colliecrete – a low carbon geopolymer concrete. In the north of WA I am working on the establishment of renewable hydrogen power and fuel demonstration projects with indigenous partners.
At Murdoch University I am the Circular Economy theme leader with Harry Butler Institute, Centre for Energy Water & Waste. I am also working through the Ngangk Yira Aboriginal Health Research Centre to establish a program of smart digital water services across WA homeland communities.
I chair the Environmental Engineering program, teach across a range of the associated undergraduate units, set up industry-focussed research/design projects for the final year students, arrange their internships, and assist their recruitment into workplaces.
I manage the research group EELS (Environmental Engineering & Life Systems) with a number of HDR PhD research students. Recently completed research program is decarbonising cities and regions with Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (CUSP), current research projects included decentralised seawater desalination, water recycling and emerging research is smart grids and the energy-water-food nexus.
In consulting I conduct water, energy and waste audits, behavioural change programs, housing and infrastructure design, renewable energy developments, commissioning, evaluation and communications strategies and the business development to procure these projects.
My approach to sustainability is threefold: supporting community leadership, development of more efficient systems and switching to green infrastructure. Firstly, raising awareness with communities, delivering behaviour change programs, and promoting champions is most cost effective and critical to build social capital necessary to support the next 2 steps. Secondly, a systematic approach to retrofitting existing homes, offices and industry and building new facilities to high levels of efficiency will result in huge cost savings for the third step = green infrastructure, renewable energy: essential for long term viability of society, economy and environment.
Specialties: strategic technology selection development & evaluation, energy-water-waste audits, renewable energy, behavioural change programs, education & training for sustainability.
