Summary:
This workshop provides a thorough examination of the current state and future prospects of solar photovoltaic (PV) and photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) technologies. It explores the evolving market dynamics, industry opportunities, and technological advancements in these fields. The discussion highlights the critical role of both policy and technological investments in shaping the future competitiveness and market potential of solar PV and PV/T systems. Emphasizing the technological aspects, the workshop offers a detailed overview of the technical innovations, policy frameworks, market trends, and industry investments necessary to elevate PV and PV/T technologies to a new level of impact as a major clean-energy contributor in the global energy landscape. Participants will gain insights into the strategic shifts required to transition from incremental improvements to disruptive and revolutionary technologies. The workshop argues for a shift in focus from near-term, evolutionary strategies to more transformative approaches that address our needs over the next 10–15 years and beyond. Presenter: Professor Hussein A Kazem, Sohar University, Oman Brief biodata: Professor Dr. Hussein A. Kazem is an accomplished electrical engineer with over 30 years in academia and research, holding degrees from the University of Technology, Iraq, and a PhD from Newcastle University, UK. His career began at Al-Mamon College in 1995, and he later joined Sohar University, Oman, where he serves as a professor and collaborates as a visiting professor in Malaysia and the UK. Hussein is a prolific researcher with over 270 publications, nine book chapters, and eight books, along with numerous awards, including multiple Golden Medals and prestigious honors at international conferences. His research focuses on photovoltaics, renewable energy, power electronics, and electrical systems, leading several research projects and six grants. Hussein supervises graduate students and chairs the Renewable Energy & Sustainable Technology Research Group, contributing to Oman’s Renewable Energy Strategic Program. He is also the Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Renewable Energy & Environmental Sustainability.
